THE BUZZ: Remember Gotham by Gaslight, the pitch for a steampunk-inspired Batman game that surfaced a while back? Now, prototype animation footage for the proposal has been revealed.
EGM’s TAKE: First, credit goes out to Siliconera for getting their hands on this very interesting piece of video.
The project—pitched by F.3.A.R. and Fracture developer Day 1 Studios—would have seen Batman running around the foggy streets of Gotham, where he would have had the ability to see in the dark. The game was to take inspiration from the one-shot Batman comic of the same name, which had Batman tracking down Jack the Ripper.
While I’m not a huge Batman fan (like my EGM pal Ray is), what gets me interested in the character are takes on him that are unique and/or different. This certainly would have been that! It’s almost like Batman meets Silent Hill—which, now that I think about it, would also be something that I’d play.
The animation work on Batman’s cape in this video utterly crazy here, almost to the point of being distracting. I would also say that, for going for a steampunk vision, I think Batman’s outfit is terrible boring. I’d love to have seen something more real-world steampunk inspired.
But alas, the project was never meant to be, which is a real shame. Or, maybe it isn’t, because had this happened, Batman: Arkham Asylum might not have come to exist. So maybe it was for the best.
Update: Previous link we had for the prototype video seems to have gone done. For now, you can watch the video by clicking the Siliconera link below.
