PS Vita Sales Below PSP in Japan

THE BUZZ: The Playstation Vita debuted with strong initial sales, selling 325,000 in its first week in Japan. Since then sales have been sharply declining, and while that is expected following a holiday rush, sales have fell so low, the device is currently being outsold by the original PSP. According to Media Create via Andriasang, PS Vita sales have declined from 324,859 in it’s opening week to 72,479 the week after, and then 42,648 to 42,915 in the following weeks, and finally 18,361 by January 15.
The PS Vita was not the only system to drop in sales. The Nintendo 3DS fell a whopping 50 percent as well, but still managed to outsell its predecessor with 100,668 units sold.
EGM’s TAKE: The Playstation Vita is dead! Fire, brimstone, horror, giant radioactive rubber pants! What will Sony do?! Probably release more games and sell more units eventually. First month sales numbers are fun to look at, but are never truly indicative of a system’s potential. Let’s all stare in the general direction of the Nintendo Wii and secretly remember how hardware was sold and how little software was sold with it.
