THE BUZZ: Crytek, creators of the CryEngine, have decided it wants a piece of the social networking pie, and have created a social network for gamers called GFace. GFace is a multiplayer focused network that allows members to stream games directly into their browsers. Calling GFace the Facebook of gaming isn’t far off. Looking into the feature set we can see that the social aspects of the platform seem well thought out and deeper than one would expect. If you’re interested in giving GFace a spin, Crytek is holding a closed beta for potential members to try an access.
EGM’s TAKE: No matter how many times we say the name GFace it sounds odd. It’s almost as if Crytek wants people associate GFace with Facebook and this was the best way they figured that would happen. We like the interface, as it is very clean looking, and the idea is interesting enough as well. The sign of an established social network is when someone’s mother becomes a member and floods their kid’s page with, “get off the computer and do your homework” messages. Whether or not GFace will be popular enough to embarrass your kids with is something we’ll find out soon enough.
