Porting older video games to current consoles usually represents a massive amount of development problems for any team, and id Software was looking at a similar issue for the PlayStation 3 ports of Doom and Doom II. Luckily, the team had a solution right under their noses, thanks to some key technology they used for Rage on the PS3 last year.
Joystiq caught up with id Software creative director Tim Willits at QuakeCon 2012, where he described how the team was able to get network support ready for the PS3 versions of both games:
“We never released Doom 1 and Doom 2 on the PlayStation Network,” Willits said. “So we’re like, ‘OK, what’s the easiest way to do this?’ And what the guys did instead of rewriting all the network support, [support for] friends, and all that kind of stuff, is they took Rage, took out all the ‘Rage’ bits and put Doom 1 and 2 on top of it.“
As a result, the Doom 3 BFG Edition will have clean, net-ready ports of both games on PSN, despite the fact that you’re looking at 18-year-old graphics running on Rage‘s Tech 5 engine.
Doom 3 BGF Edition hits shelves for all consoles (PS3, Xbox 360, and PC) on October 16th in North America, and October 19th in Europe, packing in Doom, Doom II: Hell on Earth, Doom 3, and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, plus extra “lost mission” content. Each title is completely remastered, to boot, so they’ll all look as port-perfect as possible.
