Racial Slur Appears in Minecraft Menus – Mojang Apologizes

THE BUZZ: Minecraft developer Mojang has released a statement apologizing for a racial slur which found its way into the game’s latest snapshot build, thanks to one member of the community.

After installing the latest update fans who changed the language to “Afrikaans” discovered the slur where the game’s single player option should be. ”In these snapshots there are about 50 language files translated by the community, and it happens that they are ruined by pranksters,” Mojang told Kotaku. “Players are quick to find and fix these, so they are removed in the next snapshot.”

EGM’s TAKE: This isn’t a big, clever or funny thing to do, and hopefully the community can discover the person who added this “translation” and prevent him from further updating the game’s files. Luckily these updates, although publicly available, aren’t used by a large portion of the community so it shouldn’t cause too many issues for Mojang. It’s a good thing that the game’s community noticed the addition so it could be removed once the next snapshot gets compiled and released. This is the danger of letting the public help with the development of a game, although the majority take it seriously and really help the developer, there will always be someone who abuses that trust.

Should the person responsible be punished, or should it just be taken as a joke? Leave your thoughts below.
