A new video from Rare has revealed a proposed follow-up to Conker: Live and Reloaded that would have expanded the world of the profane-but-lovable squirrel with a medieval-themed multiplayer shooter.
The behind-the-scenes look at Conker: Gettin’ Medieval, as the game would have been called, is part of the ongoing Rare Revealed series the studio is running on YouTube after warm reception of similar content in the August retrospective complication Rare Replay.
According to the video, Gettin’ Medieval would have built off Live & Reloaded with a focus on siege warfare that reworked familiar classes into feudal counterparts: The Sky Jockey became the Sky Knight, and the Long Ranger because the Musketeer. Interestingly, designer and Conker voice actor Chris Seavor says the game’s main character would have actually been Death. Conker himself would have been limited to a handful of bushy-tailed cameos.
The project never moved beyond the concept phase, but the clip does have some of the early character art that was done for the proposed medieval revamp if you’re interested in what might have been.
After the Gettin’ Medieval concept was shelved, Conker didn’t appear in playable form for almost 10 years. His return came courtesy of Conker’s Big Reuinion, an episodic game built using Microsoft’s Project Spark game creation tool. The first episode, offering around a half-hour of gameplay, arrived in April to little fanfare. With the recent announcement that Project Spark will be ending all DLC support, it will also be the last.
