The city councillor for Scottish town Hawick says the GTAV town of the same name, described by the Rockstar website as having “a disaffected drug addict hipster vibe,” could ruin the real town’s reputation.
“I am absolutely disgusted—there is a lot of history and a lot of good things happening in the town,” local councillor David Paterson told BBC News. “We have got a lot of good things planned for this coming year. It is going to destroy the good reputation of the town.”
“Why did they pick on Hawick? It is a lovely town,” he added. “It is perceptions, it is how people will perceive the town. They might perceive Hawick in a bad light and Hawick is a lovely place—a lot of people are very, very proud of Hawick.”
The Grand Theft Auto series is, of course, known for scathing satire and over-the-top parody, with humor possessing tongue that’s firmly planted in cheek. By all accounts, Hawick is meant to be more of a hipster locale in the game—think Echo Park in LA, which the fictional area is nestled near the digital equivalent of (called Mirror Park in GTAV). Specifically, Hawick seems likely a play on Highland Park. Scottish Highlands, Scottish town name for the GTAV equivalent. This is, of course, just EGM piecing together an explanation but it seems likely.
“They clearly do not know Hawick well, and that is why I have invited them to meet with me at my office on the town’s High Street,” said John Lamont, the town’s Member of the Scottish Parliament. “Hawick is one of the most beautiful towns in Scotland and I am sure that by showing them the town and telling them of its proud history they will realize the mistake they have made.”
