Red Dead Redemption

The Red Dead Online beta is getting a major expansion next week, and Rockstar has all the details.

The update rolls out on Tuesday, February 26th, and introduces the first new batch of weapons, clothing, and emotes to the game. It will also kick off the game’s weekly promotions and new content, and implements several improvements and balance tweaks.

The biggest new gameplay activity is the Fool’s Gold Free Roam event, a massive fight where players compete to claim a suit of gaudy golden armor. Kill the player with the armor, wear it yourself, and rack up kills while wearing the armor to gain more points. Whoever gets the most points wins.

For players who want something a little less murdery, Fishing Challenges now reward the most skilled fishermen. Opt in and you’ll be given a specific set of fishing equipment, complete with the rod, lures, and bait you’ll need for each challenge. Whoever snags the highest weight total of fish wins.

Players can also compete either solo or with a team in three new Showdown Modes: Up in Smoke, Spoils of War, and Plunder, though these haven’t yet been detailed. Keep an eye out for a new variation of Target Races to test your aim and horseback skills, as well.

Of course, there are also plenty of new items for players who want to go on a spending spree. Players will be able to grab the Evans Repeater rifle and Rare Shotgun from the Wheeler & Rawson Catalogue, and local gunsmiths. Watch the Catalogue and local shops for new clothing and emotes as well, including the Diamondback Hat, Rutledge Vest, and more individual clothing pieces and outfits.

Finally, PlayStation 4 players will gain access to a small sampling of early access content. Test out Open Target Races for your chance to take down targets while on horseback, and look for the Jawbone Knife and several other unique cosmetics and emotes in the shops.

All players in the Red Dead Online beta will receive a 20 percent XP bonus this week, leading up to the release of the update on February 26th. The update should roll out at the same time for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players.
