Remember Me Creative Director Details the Development of Nilin’s Design

In a video Q&A released by Capcom, Remember Me‘s creative director Jean-Maxime Moris talks at length about the development of protagonist Nilin’s character design.

At the earliest stage of Remember Me’s development, when the game was known as Adrift and had a nautical focus that revolved around global warming and transportation via jet skis, Moris describes Nilin’s design as something that stepped out of Blade Runner. At this stage, she wore khaki pants and a knee-length raincoat (somewhat in line with cyberpunk noir protagonists, as well).

Nilin’s next design flung her further into the future, giving her a body suit made of “futuristic fabric” that made her look more like a spy.

Ultimately, developer Dontnod Entertainment settled on a design that flirted with futuristic, but was still grounded in a relatable reality that felt plausible—a natural evolution of humanity’s future. This resulted in Nilin’s current design.

In the video, Moris also expresses his pleasure with how well received Nilin’s design has been so far, saying, “I’m glad that in 2013 things have changed, and things are changing. People more and more, in the games industry, relate to female characters, and that’s very import an tot me because movies and books have been portraying female characters for hundreds if not thousands of years, and I think it’s time our media grew up.”

Check out the full, 18-minute interview with Moris in the video embedded below.

Remember Me launches on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 June 4 in North America, June 7 in Europe. Look for EGM’s review of Remember Me on Monday, June 3rd.
