Reports of Diablo III Account Hacking, Gold and Items Stolen

A number of users over on the Battle.net forums are reporting that their accounts have been hacked and their gold and items have been stolen.
Blizzard is currently in the process of rolling back characters who have reported that their accounts were hacked, restoring their lost items and gold. Yesterday, the European servers went down for several hours, with Blizzard offering no official reason for the downtime. One theory claims that the servers were taken offline following an SQL injection attack to prevent players logging in— but for now, this is still just a theory.
It seems odd that the servers would be taken offline without Blizzard giving an actual reason, and then for that downtime to be followed by all these hacking claims. Eurogamer writer Christian Donlan had first hand experience of the hack, details of which can be found here. Even players using Blizzard’s authenticator for account protection are reporting being hacked.
Unfortunately for Blizzard, this is just another major stumbling block in the mess that has been Diablo III‘s launch.
