Resident Evil

Capcom’s latest Resident Evil 2 trailer didn’t offer any new gameplay footage, but instead, gave a taste of the new narrative players will experience in the remake.

Revealed during this year’s Tokyo Game Show, the new footage offers a sneak peek of Claire’s first time meeting Sherry Birkin, Ada’s entrance into the story, and an encounter with a mutated version of William Birkin.

While the developer has already confirmed the remake will closely follow the original’s plot, it did tease that there would be a “deeper narrative experience,” and this trailer finally unveiled what that could mean.

In the original, when Claire meets Sherry, the young girl has no idea that the monstrosity lurking around the police department is her father. However, it appears in the remake that she’ll know fairly early on her dad is, as she puts it, “gone.” Perhaps players will get more background on Sherry’s experience and involvement in the G-virus creation this time around.

Ada’s entrance in Resident Evil 2 is also slightly different. Here, Ada not only appears in a new outfit—a trench coat and sunglasses—but she immediately reveals to Leon that she’s there to learn more about the zombie outbreak. For comparison, when Leon first encountered Ada in the original, she pretended to be someone lost in the shuffle of the town’s chaos and on the hunt for her boyfriend. It was only later that players learned she played a larger role in the bioweapon narrative. Similar to Sherry, it seems that the upcoming remake will offer a more in-depth look at Ada’s life and involvement in the whole outbreak.

Of course, gameplay is just as important as story, so fans looking for more on that front have a few trailers to enjoy. Recently, Capcom showed off Claire’s first fight with the monstrous William, as well as Leon taking on a horde of zombies in the Raccoon City Police Department.

Resident Evil 2 will launch for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 25th, 2019.
