Capcom’s remake of Resident Evil 2 might be taking a gritty and modern approach to survival horror, but it isn’t completely dismissing the fun of the original PlayStation game. Fans of the 1998 classic will see the return of a few iconic characters, including Hunk, Tofu, and that giant alligator.
According to Resident Evil 2 senior manager Yoshiaki Hirabayashi (via Trusted Reviews), the two endgame modes from the original release of the survival horror game will be unlockable. “Both the Fourth Survivor and Tofu modes will be included in the game,” Hirabayashi said.
In the original Resident Evil 2, players that were able to earn an A rank in Claire and Leon’s campaigns were given access to Fourth Survivor, which was a difficult mini-game that featured a new playable character, Hunk. For an even greater challenge, players could earn an A rank on three complete playthroughs of the main campaign and unlock the Tofu mode. In it, Hunk literally becomes a giant piece of tofu and has more enemies to avoid.
It’s unclear if the remake’s Hunk and Tofu mini-games will be unlocked in the same ways, but Hirabayashi did confirm in an interview with Polygon that the original’s infamous sewer alligator will make a comeback. “I really like the alligator character and want to have it in there,” he said. “I think it’s part of Resident Evil 2‘s history, and people have lots of great memories of it.”
Resident Evil 2 will launch for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 25th, 2019.
