THE BUZZ: Shinji Mikami—the creator of one of the most popular survival horror franchises of all time, Resident Evil—has now announced a brand new horror-based game project.

EGM’s TAKE: In 2010, Mikami started his own game studio, Tango Gameworks. As his first major game for Tango, Mikami has revealed “Zwei”—the codename for a new video game project filled with survival horror elements.

Zwei will be released in 2013 or later, and Mikami will serve as its executive producer (with Ikumi Nakamura as director).

“As a master of the ‘survival horror’ genre, Shinji Mikami is committed to making a game that is the realization of pure survival horror, an experience which he defines as one that pushes the limits of fear and exhilaration,” the Tango Gameworks website states. “He and his team at Tango are committed to attaining this vision.”

As well, Mikami posted the following message on the teaser page for Zwei:

“I’ve found my focus and once again I’m striving for pure survival horror. I am being very hands-on to see that the quality is there. Rest assured.”

As a fan of the original Resident Evil, and as somebody who appreciated what he brought to Resident Evil 4 as the director of the game, I can’t wait to see what Mikami has in store for us.
