Respawn creating a ‘parkour playground’ with Titanfall DLC’s new War Games map

Posted on April 24, 2014 AT 11:40am

War Games, one of the new Titanfall maps being added in May’s Expedition DLC, is designed to be a “parkour playground,” Respawn Entertainment detailed in a recent post on the game’s official website.

Designer Jason McCord, who penned the post, describes War Games as a blend of elements from Angel City, Rise, and Airbase—all thrown into a digital, simulated environment that’s “smooth, clean, and abstract—a perfect place to design easy-to-read battle spaces and wallrun paths.”

The IMC begin the match in a building modeled after Airbase’s large structures, while the middle of the map houses a tower based off Rise (complete with tight hallways and small rooms). Opposite the IMC’s starting point is the Militia side, which resembles Angel City at night and boasts several spaced out buildings (the map’s layout can be seen below).

“As a designer, I wanted to have the freedom to place wallrun paths wherever I needed them, to connect important areas together,” McCord wrote. “After running around the training mission looking for inspiration, I realized the colored force fields could make a fun wallrunning panel. These are found throughout the map and sometimes stretch across long distances, above battling Titans below. These are meant to be obvious paths to help encourage players that haven’t embraced this new way of traversing maps. Because of the environment, we even used arrows to help guide players where we wanted them to run.”

McCord goes on to describe Respawn’s approach to designing maps that accommodate to Pilot and Titan alike, as well as multiple game modes. You can read his full post on Titanfall’s official website.

The Expedition DLC is set to drop sometime in May, free to season pass holders ($24.99) or $9.99 to purchase individually. The DLC will also add two other new maps, Runoff and Swamplands, in addition to Wargames. No concrete release date has been given.
