According to developer Brian Provinciano, February’s release of Retro City Rampage on the 3DS eShop has proven incredibly successful, even managing to outshine the Xbox Live Arcade Version of the game.
“Despite launching a year later/only in North America initially, Retro City Rampage‘s first month on 3DS exceeded the XBLA [version’s] worldwide,” Provinciano tweeted. He later clarified that the comparison was “first month to first month,” adding that “the 3DS version will outsell XBLA completely in a bit.”
In fact, the 3DS release had such a staggering launch that it’s already turned a greater profit than the 360 version, which came out in January of 2013. “The 3DS version’s already netted more revenue than 360 [life to date]. Units is only a matter of time,” Provinciano explained.
Provinciano failed to mention how the 3DS launch stacked up against the PS3, Vita, PC, or WiiWare versions of the game, but the news should still comfort indie developers with their sights set on the handheld. While Nintendo might not have the best reputation for wooing indies at the moment, it’s clear there’s a huge market there.
