Despite stating on several occasions that it would never happen, Trion Worlds has today announced that its MMO RIFT will be going free-to-play next month.
The F2P option will be added on June 12 with the usual leveling experience being offered for free and items such as cosmetics and consumables being offered in the cash shop. An optional subscription will still be available for those who wish to use it.
“We have been listening to feedback from our players and watching the continuously developing MMO community, and are now ready to launch RIFT as a premium free-to-play experience,” said Bill Fisher, creative director. “After taking our time and planning a careful transition; we are very excited to bring an enhanced game experience to everyone, without barriers.”
Trion will offer current and previous subscribers a boost in the form of loyalty and currency bonuses. Update 2.3 will kick off RIFT‘s F2P charge by adding a new zone, world event, chronicle, and more.
