RUMOR: 4K Resolution Support Coming to PlayStation 4

Posted on August 22, 2012 AT 06:36pm

This generation, consoles are touting (and struggling to reach) high-definition resolutions of 720p and 1080p. According to a new rumor today, however, Sony’s next console could support resolutions up to 4096 x 2160.

As talked about over on the Boy Genius Report, Sony is already in the process of releasing a 4K resolution 80″ XBR LED television, one which will feature visual resolutions far, far higher than today’s 1080p sets. BGR notes that Sony already has 4K Blu-ray players on the market, and—according to their sources—the PlayStation 4 will also bring along with it support for handing playback at those high-end resolutions.

Now, let’s be honest here. First, there isn’t exactly a huge amount of content out there for consumers to buy that’s 4K resolution. From what I understand, the majority of what you can do right now is upscale your Blu-ray movies to 4K. And as far as games? We still have releases this generation that can’t even reach 720p without having framerate and screen tearing issues.

Could the PlayStation 4 be bringing with it 4K resolution, and could games here or there potentially make use of such resolutions? Absolutely. For now, however, I can’t see it making sense for developers not only technically, but also audience-wise—most people aren’t going to be buying a 4K TV at any point in the near future.
