THE BUZZ: It seems all of the talk lately has been about what Microsoft’s next Xbox console is going to be, so why not get back to contemplating the Wii U’s hardware with a fresh set of rumors?

This time, the talk comes from a source claiming to be a Japanese developer, one who is working on porting a PS3 game to the Wii U. According to this source, some of the Wii U’s internal specs are:

• Quad-Core, 3GHz 45nm PowerPC CPU — said to be “very similar” to the Xbox 360′s CPU
• 768MB of embedded DRAM, which is shared between the CPU and GPU
• An “unknown” 40nm ATI-based GPU

The source, however, also mentions that Nintendo is supposedly testing two versions of the hardware—one with 768MB of RAM, and one with 1GB.

EGM’s TAKE: There is some skepticism going on surrounding these specs, but that’s more due to the idea of the DRAM being embedded in such a physically small CPU versus the actual specs themselves. Beyond that, everything seems realistic, especially given the level of hardware Nintendo now seems to prefer working with.

With new Xbox and PlayStation releases looming on the horizon, however, time will tell if the Wii U will be powerful enough to keep pace with them—or, really, if Wii U owners will even care about that point.
