THE BUZZ: Footage has appeared online claiming to show Free Radical’s cancelled Star Wars: Battlefront III in action.
This new clip is taken from an early Xbox 360 build of the game and shows what the full game could have offered via its extensive menus. Modes such as Story Campaign, Training, Galactic Conquest, Instant Action, Challenges, Freeplay and Jedi Arena are all shown.
The story began with a prologue set on Tatooine before moving on to Coruscant, Cato Nemoidia, Dantooine and more. Some of the game’s maps were designed to hold 32 players online.
The video also shows Free Radical’s seamless planet-to-space technology that would provide constant action between fighting on the ground and heading into space. Lucas Arts reportedly cancelled the game around 2 years into its development back in 2008.
Star Wars: Battlefront III is now apparently in development at Spark Unlimited. Images appeared online Monday claiming to be from a build of the game that Slant Six Studios was working on before the project was moved on to Spark.
EGM’s TAKE: It seems odd that footage from back in 2008 would suddenly appear online four years later, especially when the last seen footage of the title was seen around three years ago. However, the user may have been sitting on it until some Battlefront excitement was generated againm and Monday’s leaked images provided just that opportunity. The footage does look believable, and seems like a lot of effort just to fake some four year old footage, though we don’t put the possibility beyond some dedicated fanboy. The planet-to-space technology is also included in this video which also leads us to believe that the video could be real.
