Final Fantasy Versus XIII has been renamed to Final Fantasy XV and will now release as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, according to a new report.
VGLeaks, one of the more reliable sources for next-gen information, reports that Square Enix halted development of Final Fantasy Versus XIII two years ago, renaming the game to Final Fantasy XV and switching it to a PlayStation 4 exclusive. According to the site, Sony has come on board as a co-developer “helping with assets among other tasks.”
A previous rumor stated that Versus XIII had been cancelled, but Square Enix president Yoichi Wada denied these rumors by stating that the project hadn’t been abandoned.
Honestly, I really hope this is true because I’m fed up of hearing about Versus XIII, it’s been seven years and still nothing. I’d much rather have a new main entry in the series to enjoy rather than another spin-off and it would also mean that we could put the disastrous XIII saga to bed once and for all. If this isn’t true then don’t expect to see Final Fantasy XV until at least 2016.
If you think back to the PlayStation 4 announcement event, Square Enix did promise that they had a new game to show off at E3, could Final Fantasy XV be it?
