Ever since the rumors first started circulating that Prey 2 development had been shifted to Arkane both the developer and publisher, Bethesda, have denied them. However, a leaked internal email seems to suggest that they may not have been entirely truthful.
An internal email sent out by Arkane Creative Director Raphael Colantonio (obtained by Kotaku) states that the Austin branch of Arkane has been greenlit to start work on Prey 2 and it’s been pitched as a spiritual successor to System Shock 2.
“Austin has officially been green lit for its own project!” the email, sent back in May, reads. “Doing a new IP was not a possibility because it’s adding risk to the challenge of growth, so after going back and forth with Todd, Harvey, Ricardo, we decided that Prey 2 presented an interesting opportunity if we could reboot it. Zenimax accepted our pitch which was “the spiritual successor to System Shock (2).”
The use of the word reboot seems to suggest that Arkane will be starting from scratch and won’t simply be carrying on with previous developer Human Head’s work.
