RUMOR: Memory Leak to Blame for Skyrim PlayStation 3 Lag Issues
Posted on December 1, 2011 AT 06:34am
THE BUZZ: One user on the Bethesda official forums has been doing some investigative work on what could be causing the persistent lag issues on the PlayStation 3 version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Patch 1.2, which was released this week, seems to have alleviated the problem but hasn’t eradicated it completely, with some users still complaining. User “SKBlank” seems to think that the lag is being caused by a massive memory leak in the consoles virtual memory. He believes that the size of the save file isn’t the deciding factor but world participation is the cause, as bigger save files lead to larger world participation so there is more chance or triggering the leak, which would explain why resetting the console stops the problem for a little while as the memory is cleared. You can read the full explanation here.
EGM’s TAKE: If this is the cause then Bethesda had better get working on a fix quickly, although we think they would have worked it out if that was the actual cause.
