Microsoft is no longer charging developers to apply patches to their Xbox 360 retail and arcade games, according to a new report.
Multiple development sources have informed Eurogamer that the company made the changes on the quiet earlier this year. Previously developers were charged tens of thousands of dollars to apply a patch to their game after the first free update.
Microsoft charges developers to submit their games for certification on the console and then offers one free update after the game is live, however all subsequent updates are now free also. There are some instances where this isn’t the case however, according to development sources. If a developer continuously submits a patch for re-certification after it fails then Microsoft reserves the right to charge a fee.
The fee was originally put in place to persuade developers to take their time with updates to ensure the quality of titles on the system remained high. Whether this fee will be reinstated on Xbox One is unknown at this time.
