RUMOR: Nexon, NCsoft Planning To Purchase Valve Corporation
Posted on September 27, 2012 AT 12:10pm
It’s incredibly unlikely, but MMO gaming giants Nexon and NCsoft apparently want to acquire Valve, one of the biggest PC game distributors in the entire market. If that was true, it would be huge.
However, a Valve spokesperson has told The Verge‘s gaming hub that the reports from Korea’s JoongAng Ilbo article (part of the MSN network) are nothing more than a rumor.
Still, one can’t help but think about the choice of words there.
If the statement was false, Valve would’ve said so, rather than calling it a rumor. Moreover, Nexon and NCsoft certainly do have the money to Valve if the company ever opened itself up for business to other parties.
As the biggest MMO developers and publishers in the world, purchasing Valve would allow both companies to control a large portion of the PC market, effectively shutting down other competition.
Still, Valve isn’t exactly hurting for cash themselves, as the Steam Store provides more than enough revenue and profits for the group to run on their own, er, steam, for a quite a long time into the foreseeable future.
