Microsoft is preparing a public beta of its next Xbox 360 dashboard update for release in June/July and it will feature several UI changes along with the beginning of the company’s move to phase out Microsoft Points, according to a new report.
Sources familiar with Microsoft’s Xbox plans have told The Verge that the beta will begin either in June or July with a full release scheduled for August. The user interface will get a makeover with smaller Live tiles, similar to the planned Windows 8.1 changes, and the overall look will be tweaked thanks to the ability to choose from lighter or darker themes.
The Verge also reports that Microsoft is planning to transition Xbox 360 users over to its new gift card real-currency system that it will use for the Next Xbox with this update. The plan is to replace Microsoft Points with real world currency options and allow users to purchase gift cards similar to iTunes cards from retail stores.
Microsoft is set to reveal the Next Xbox at a special event on May 21. The new currency system will be announced at E3, according to recent rumors.
