Nintendo’s Wii U may be heavily focused on the new touch-screen tablet controller, but as noted in some of our previews, certain games will require a substantial amount of controllers for that full five-player party atmosphere.
That’s why this latest scrap of information from the Wii U rumor mill at least sounds pretty plausible, as Nintendo France executive Stephan Bole is supposedly saying that the Wii U will release in several different configurations—some with Wii Remotes, others with specific games. Since games like Nintendo Land will require an armful of controllers, that would be a smart move by Nintendo in order to capitalize on accessory sales for new adopters and upgraders.
This is because some people might not be familiar with the original Wii and its accessories, since the Wii U requires Wiimotes for multiplayer gaming. He added that while there have been over 200 million Wiimotes sold globally, it’s not guaranteed that future Wii U owners had the original Wii console.
Nintendo has been rumored to include a copy of Nintendo Land with the Wii U when it launches. The company showcased a white and black Wii U during E3, but it’s unclear whether both versions will be available at launch.
Although a release date, price, and launch lineup still has yet to be confirmed by Nintendo, here’s a quick list of some Wii U titles that require Wii U GamePad and Wii Remote combinations for multiplayer:
- Nintendo Land
- New Super Mario Bros. U
- Just Dance 4
- Tank! Tank! Tank!
- Rayman Origins
- Rabbids Land
- Tekken Tag Tournament 2
