RUMOR: Obsidian’s Cancelled Project Was Killed By Microsoft

THE BUZZ: Earlier, rumors went out that Obsidian had canceled a major upcoming next-gen project that they were working on. Now, another source is saying that the game was was Microsoft—who killed the project.

EGM’s TAKE: According to Kotaku, the site has been told by “sources familiar with the project” that the cancelled “North Carolina” game project was killed by none other than Microsoft.

Allegedly, Obsidian was working on the title for the company’s next Xbox platform, and Microsoft decided to cancel the project yesterday—after being in development for almost seven months. Kotaku’s sources say that, due to this cancellation by Microsoft, Obsidian had to let go of 30 staffers (as reported earlier today).

Of course, at this point, none of these details have been confirmed—nor do we know the exact situation surrounding the cancellation of the game and why Microsoft came to that decision (if this rumor indeed ends up being true). Maybe the folks in Redmond decided that they weren’t happy with the results that were being achieved—or maybe they decided the game wasn’t going in the direction they had originally hoped. Or, maybe Microsoft has just decided to scrap all plans for a new Xbox console.

Okay—I’m probably wrong on that last guess.
