SDCC 2012: Tomb Raider Reboot Reveals Rhianna Pratchett As Lead Writer

Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix have announced some promising talent to the writing for Tomb Raider, as the famous Rhianna Pratchett joins the staff as a lead scribe for the delayed reboot. Hopefully, the game’s delay is late enough that Pratchett can help tweak some of the more questionable material and dialogue we’ve seen in previews of the title so far.

An announcement was made today on the developer’s Twitter, along with a more detailed note on the official Tomb Raider franchise Tumblr page:

After two years of working quietly behind the scenes, award-winning games writer Rhianna Pratchett has been revealed as the lead writer on Tomb Raider!

“Rhianna has been working on the game with the narrative from its early inception,” said head of studio Darrell Gallagher. “She has brought a unique perspective to the project and helped us explore the character origins of Lara Croft. There is no doubt that Rhianna has brought a depth and credibility to Lara, a heroine who will really connect with today’s gamers.”

As the daughter of the all-time great Sir Terence David John ”Terry” Pratchett (author of  the “Discworld” series), Rhianna Pratchett is a rather notable celebrity addition for the team. Moreover, she’s got a long history of solid video game writing projects, including Mirror’s EdgePrince of Persia, and the Overlord series.

Pratchett will also be appearing at two San Diego Comic-Con panels this weekend. First off will the Nerd HQ panel at 344 7th Avenue on Saturday, July 14 at noon, followed by another panel at SDCC Room 5AB at 6 p.m. the same day.
