Sea of Solitude is an emotional journey exploring loneliness


 

A while back, EA picked up Jo-Mei, a small new indie studio from Berlin, and now E3 has brought us our first look at Jo-Mei’s first new game: Sea of Solitude.

As writer and creative director Cornelia Geppert explained up on stage at EA’s E3 2018 presentation, Sea of Solitude is a game that’s all about loneliness. The game was inspired by her own personal experiences, and aims to show how emotions like loneliness and hopelessness can turn humans into monsters—and, in Sea of Solitude‘s case, it’s a literal transformation. The game’s central character, Kay, has already become a monster, and must learn to deal with her fears and flaws.

Sea of Solitude is by far the most artistic and personal project I’ve ever created,” Geppert said in a post on EA’s website. “At times it is very challenging to dig that deep into your own feelings like core fears, longing, and anger, but at the same time it is the most fulfilling thing to express those very feelings by putting it to people through art.”

She pointed out that the game’s name, Sea of Solitude, has a double meaning. It can be abbreviated to SOS, the international signal for a person or ship in distress.

Sea of Solitude is set to release in early 2019.
