The second developer diary for Ubisoft’s upcoming UbiArt-built side-scrolling adventure-puzzler Valiant Hearts: The Great War explores gameplay and how that factors into players’ reliance on their companion pup, Walt.
According to various members of the development team, gameplay in Valiant Hearts was designed to fit around the emotional themes of war they hoped to evoke through Valiant Hearts. As such, the game leans more heavily toward the puzzle-solving side of the spectrum, but does contain—when pacing demands it—short bursts of action.
“It’s not a war game,” lead designer Julien Chevallier says in the video, “it’s a game about war through which we experience the World War I time period.”
Valiant Hearts: The Great War launches across PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360’s respective digital platforms on June 25.
