Sega 3D Classics Finally Coming to Non-Japanese 3DS Owners

Posted on October 30, 2013 AT 10:23am

For a while now, consumers in Japan have been able to purchase 3D-ified classic Sega titles via the 3DS’ eShop. We in the West have only been able to sit back and watch with envy-filled eyes. Now, however, that wrong will be made right.

For today, Sega announced that eight such games will be packing up their bags and setting sail for borders beyond those of their home territory of Japan. We’ll be getting two game releases per week—the full list presented below—and each will come in at $5.99 US dollars, or €4.99/£4.49 for those of you who purchase goods with paper money featuring strange symbols and people.

My excitement over this announcement is mixed. I’m glad they’re coming, but I’ve already purchased Sonic the Hedgehog somewhere around 20 times at this point in my life; knowing I’ll have to buy the game yet again drives me a little crazy. That, and I’d love to see some other titles get the 3D treatment instead of the usual selection of Genesis hits. The original Phantasy Star may be from all the way back in the 8-bit era, but not only does it still look good, Sega could do some fabulous things with it in converting it to 3D. Or what about lesser-known Genesis releases like Landstalker or Shining in the Darkness?

Anyhow, here’s the list of games that we’ll be getting, along with their release date. My bank account already weeps.

  • 3D Space Harrier, 3D Super Hang-On – 11/28/2013
  • 3D Sonic The Hedgehog, 3D Altered Beast – 12/5/2013
  • 3D Ecco the Dolphin™, 3D Galaxy Force II – 12/12/2013
  • 3D Shinobi III, 3D Streets of Rage – 12/19/2013
