Now that NiGHTS into DREAMS has just celebrated the 16th anniversary of its debut on the Sega Saturn, it looks like now’s a good a time as any for Sega to hype up the franchise with a big announcement. One of those stems from the upcoming Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, which will be featuring an appearance by NiGHTS himself/herself/itself.
That news comes straight out of the fifth “Summer of Sonic” fan convention in the UK, which is officially backed by Sega Europe. As reported by the event’s site, footage of Sonic & All-Stars Racing was shown off to the crowd during a sneak peek session, with characters NiGHTS and Reala dropping in as part of the Sega-themed roster:
The levels featured are Spring Valley and areas of Nightmare featuring the bosses Gillwing and Wizeman. The characters riding NiGHTS and Reala are a Nightopian and a Nightmaren.
The level shown at Summer of Sonic was Spring Valley, although the level is still a work in progress – what attendees saw today will be polished before the game lands towards the end of this year.
This news comes at a good time, as Sega just released a teaser trailer last week touting the HD re-release of NiGHTS into DREAMS for the PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and PC (Steam) download. All the original levels from the first game are included, along with a fully-playable version of the original Sega Saturn code.
Not too shabby for a 16-year-old franchise, but the gameplay is just begging for motion controls. How about some PlayStation Move or Kinect functionality?
