Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass finally announced with teaser trailer

Serious Sam developer Croteam recently took to the stage at the Reboot Develop conference to tease the long-anticipated fourth installment of the Serious Sam franchise.

Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass now has an official teaser trailer and a full reveal scheduled for E3 2018.

The teaser opens with the titular Sam cruising on his motorcycle through an idyllic countryside, a setting we’re not so used to seeing in Serious Sam games. However, that reverie is soon broken by a familiar, screaming, headless enemy charging Sam from a field. Sam makes quick work of one, but as he reaches the top of a hill, hundreds of beheaded kamikaze come charging at him.

Croteam revealed that Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass will get a full reveal during Devolver Digital’s E3 2018 press conference, which we’re hoping is at least slightly as weird as last year’s.

As for platforms, the game’s Steam page says Serious Sam 4 will come to PC, Mac, and Linux. Based on how Croteam handled Serious Sam 3, it’s possible this new entry will launch there first before making its way to consoles, though it would hardly be a surprise if we got a simultaneous release instead.

It’s been five years since developer Croteam announced it would be funding the development of the fourth Serious Sam game with Humble Bundle sales. Since then, the Croatian studio has released The Talos Principle, a few Serious Sam VR titles, and then a return to Talos Principle in VR. We originally thought we’d get to see Serious Sam 4 at E3 2016, but obviously that never came to pass.

In addition to Serious Sam 4: Planet Badass, Croteam is also working on a sequel to Talos Principle. However, it looks like the developer’s main focus right now is finally giving us the next mainline Serious Sam title, and we’re okay with that.
