The Year of Luigi has stretched into 2014, longer than any devotee of Mario’s gangly, green-clad brother could’ve possibly hoped. But Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto has announced on Miiverse that this celebration of all things Luigi will be coming to an end on March 18th.
“Almost a year has passed since I announced the Year of Luigi, marking the 30th anniversary of Luigi’s debut,” Miyamoto said. “Thanks to everyone’s kind support, we were able to release many Luigi games over the course of the year. I hope everyone continues to cheer for the green brother! However, all good things must come to an end, and the Year of Luigi will conclude on March 18.”
Whether this means that a new yearlong celebration will launch on March 18th remains to be seen, but given the exposure this campaign brought games like Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, New Super Luigi U, and others, it would certainly make sense for Nintendo to put the spotlight on someone else come springtime.
