The official date of Pokémon’s 20th anniversary may have been back in February, but Nintendo’s still marveling over the series’ success.

“As one of the producers on the very first Pokémon games, I want to say thank you for all your kind support,” said Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo game designer and Creative Fellow, in a thank you video to fans.

Miyamoto also revealed some early history of the games. The very first Pokémon games, he said, were in development for “about six years” because the team had to dedicate time and attention to both Pokémon and Earthbound. After that, however, it was full speed ahead on Pokémon.

“Time flew by, and now there are Pokémon games in so many colors! Twenty years. I almost can’t believe it,” Miyamoto said. “Everyone, thank you for your support.”

Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow were recently rereleased on the Nintendo 3DS. A new generation of games, Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon, will release later this year.
