Shigeru Miyamoto Working on New Franchise for Nintendo

Posted on July 10, 2013 AT 02:37pm

Talking to Famitsu magazine, Mario (and Zelda and Star Fox and F-Zero) creator Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that he’s working on a brand new franchise for Nintendo.

“Next spring, with the release of Mario Kart 8, we’ll have a general selection available, so I’ve been thinking it would be a good time to bring out a new franchise,” Miyamoto told Famitsu. “I can’t say too much in detail right now, but I’ve been pretty busy with this title these days.”

The legendary game designer’s last fully new franchise was Pikmin, which debuted on GameCube in 2001, marking over a decade since Miyamoto created something wholly original for Nintendo.

At E3 2013, Miyamoto told Kotaku that a large part of creating a new franchise is “focusing on creating new gameplay experience that’s fun and unique.” So expect whatever it is Miyamoto’s working on to be more than just a new potential brawler for Smash Bros.
