Xenoblade Chronicles

During this morning’s Nintendo Direct, the company officially confirmed that Xenoblade Chronicles‘ Shulk will be joining the Smash Bros. roster.

Shulk was part of the big ESRB video leak from earlier in the week, so his inclusion wasn’t exactly a complete surprise, but it’s nice to get a cleaner look at his model and move set in this trailer. We also get to see the Xenoblade-themed Guar Plains stage, which, judging by the tease at the end, might feature one the game’s antagonist Metal Face as an NPC boss.

As is tradition, game director Masahiro Sakurai took to Miiverse to tease out a few new details about how the new character will play.

“Shulk’s sword, the Monado, slashes enemies with a beam when activated, so it can strike from long range,” Sakurai wrote. “What really makes this weapon unique is that when the Monado Arts are activated, it can change Shulk’s features and abilities! Emerge victorious in battle by changing your abilities strategically!”

Of course, none of that matters nearly as much as the ability to strip Shulk down to his skivvies. Rawr. Looks like Zero Suit Samus won’t be the only one with some salacious alternate outfits.

Super Smash Bros. launches on 3DS October 4 and Wii U sometime this holiday.
