A new skateboarding game is launching soon on Steam, and it’s trying to fill the gap left by Skate.
Dubbed Skater XL, the new game—which will enter early access on December 19th—comes from an unusual source: a mobile developer. Easy Day Studios is the team behind popular mobile game Skater, but promise that Skater XL will be a full game in its own right, not just a mobile port.
“It’s been 8 years since the last significant contribution to the skateboarding genre by a big publisher,” the developers wrote on Steam. “As an indie, we chose to spend the last four perfecting the thing that really matters for a new big step in the genre—the gameplay and controls. Now we’re confident we have something of value at the core of the product, we’d like to start the discussion with the community, to include them as we roll out our road map and plans to build more content and features over the next 24 months and beyond.”
When Skater XL launches in early access, players will have access to just one area and one character. The West LA Courthouse skate spot is described as “complete but also compact,” with the developers asking early access players to focus on testing gameplay depth rather than breadth of maps. The core gameplay and game mechanics should already be complete, a promising sign for any worried about the game’s mobile roots.
Skater XL can be found on Steam here. The early access version launches on PC on December 19th. Currently, there’s no release date for the full version.
