Sleeping Dogs Censored in Japan–Civilian Brutality Punished

By

Unsurprisingly, Square-Enix’s Sleeping Dogs has received an Adults Only rating in Japan, meaning that customers must ask for the game by name at store counters to purchase it.

The United Front developed title, which goes by the name “Sleeping Dogs Hong Kong Secret Police” in Japan, has received a few cuts and tweaks to gain a rating. The most interesting and notable of these is a penalty for attacking civilians during certain missions. It wasn’t made clear exactly what the penalty will be, but I sincerely hope that it’s hilarious.

Other game tweaks include the removal of a character that starts street races, presumably to prevent players from getting the urge to mow him down, and a reduction in the graphic level of sex scenes. Just to be clear this doesn’t mean they are shown in an 8-bit version, although that would be pretty cool.

An ability to go many hours without sleep and a quick wit make him ideal for his role as associate editor at EGMNOW.com. He often thinks back to the days when the very idea of this career seemed like nothing but an impossible dream. Follow him on Twitter @mattyjb89. Meet the rest of the crew.
