Super Smash Bros. Melee will appear for the second year in a row in the Evolution Championship Series, the event coordinators at Shoryuken announced.

Melee joins Ultra Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360), Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (Xbox 360), Injustice: Gods Among Us (Xbox 360), BlazBlue (PS3), King of Fighters XIII (Xbox 360), and Killer Instinct (Xbox One) as the seventh official game of the event.

Some of you may remember that Melee almost never made the Evo roster at all when Nintendo originally decreed that they wanted to prevent tournament organizers from streaming matches online last year. They quickly reneged on this statement after severe public backlash and thus the game was allowed in the end.

Melee serves as the entrant for the Smash series at Evo in favor of the more recent entry Super Smash Bros. Brawl after tournament organizers deemed certain Brawl mechanics, such as tripping, as unfair.

The Evolution Championship Series annually hosts the largest and longest-running fighting game tournaments in the world. This year’s showdowns will be held in Las Vegas from July 11 through July 13.
