Sony Online Entertainment has announced plans to shut down four of its current crop of MMOs later this year.
Clone Wars Adventures and Free Realms will be the first to go, with their servers scheduled to close forever on March 31. These will be followed by the closure of Wizardry Online and Vanguard: Saga of Heroes on July 31.
“At Sony Online Entertainment, we are always evaluating our portfolio to ensure we’re providing players with the best gameplay experiences,” said Michele Cagle, director of global communications. “At times, as part of this commitment, we have to make the difficult decision to sunset a game so we can refocus our resources on other areas in the best interest of our company and player community.”
“In a nutshell, the game has reached a stage in its life cycle where players are growing up and moving on to other games,” the developer said in regards to Free Realms. “We will share details on the upcoming activities and sunset soon, but we wanted to give you plenty of notice so you can truly enjoy your remaining time left in the game.”
In regards to Vanguard SOE added: “Player population numbers have decreased making it difficult to justify the resources needed to support and update this game.”
SOE concluded by revealing that current Wizardry Online and Vanguard players will have their accounts upgraded to the developer’s new All Access membership until their servers close on July 31. “Under this new All Access plan, you will be able to continue to enjoy membership benefits in [these games] until [they sunset], in addition to having top tier access in SOE’s other membership games,” Administrator Tony “RadarX” Jones wrote.
