Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley believes that BioWare and EA have made the right move adding a free-to-play option to Star Wars: The Old Republic.
“It is the only way to go for new games,” he said in a recent Reddit Q&A. “It was the right decision for SWTOR (which is a fantastic game). Wait till you see our next round of games after [Planetside 2].”
The decision to go free-to-play was announced last week following another drop in subscriber numbers. There have been mixed reactions to the news, some see it as the game’s death toll, while others see it as a chance at salvation.
Smedley also commented on the recent talk of PC gaming being in decline, “I hate it when people talk about the decline of the PC industry. It’s idiotic garbage spouted by morons that can’t count where the players are playing. It’s not like League of Legends reports numbers to NPD. The players are playing F2P games on the PC not going to retail.”
