Sonic Boom behind-the-scenes video explains all that sports tape

Posted on February 25, 2014 AT 01:16pm

In a new behind-the-scenes video for Sonic Boom, the developers offer a little insight as to what to expect tonally, and why Sonic and friends are all wearing so much sports tape.

“To me, as a character designer, there’s something that we call the lint in your pocket—which is the sense of detail of the character,” Bob Rafei, CEO and creative director at developer Big Red Button, says in the video. “And those little touches really add up to tell the story of what the characters is. For example, the sport tape that I thought is a good example of showing how active the character is and shows how fast these guys are moving.”

Similarly,  producer Stephen Frost points out how the addition of the neckerchief helps convey the idea that Sonic is an adventurer.

The video also contains a behind-the-scenes look at the companion TV series, including the voice actors reading off lines (several of which involve Knuckles talking about how edible or inedible he is).

Sonic Boom is set to launch (yuck yuck yuck) later this year on Wii U and 3DS.
