Sonic Boom will reinvent Sega’s mascot with new look, Western devs, Skrillex

Posted on February 6, 2014 AT 12:51pm

Sega has revealed that their speedy mascot is headed back to the Wii U and 3DS with a new look and Western development teams at the helm.

The Wii U version of the game, entitled Sonic Boom, is being developed by L.A. studio Big Red Button, while the 3DS version will be handled by Sanzaru, the same folks behind Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time. The title will serve as a prequel to the CG Cartoon Network series of the same name, first announced back in October, and feature an increased emphasis on exploration and combat.

Sega has released a new trailer for the game that you can check out below. The 90-second teaser features a look at ‘roided-out Knuckles, half-mummy Sonic, and steampunk enthusiast Tails, all accompanied by the dubsteptacular beats of Skrillex’s “Bangarang.” It’s a brave new world, people.

Still, maybe all these hip changes (and a fresh Western perspective) will finally help the franchise  break free of the infamous Sonic Cycle. Please no interspecies kissing, please no interspecies kissing, please no interspecies kissing…
