Sonic Mania Plus, essentially the definitive edition of Sonic Mania, has a release date: July 17th.
A new trailer shows off the new features Sonic Mania Plus brings to the game. This version of the game will release with physical discs and cartridges for the first time, and comes packaged in a holographic box with a reversible cover and a 32-page art book.
As for the game itself, Sonic Mania Plus introduces two new playable characters: Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. These characters first appeared in the 1993 arcade game SegaSonic the Hedgehog, and the latest trailer gives us a hint of what their gameplay will look like. The game also adds in updated time trials, an Encore mode that changes level layouts, and a four-player Competition Mode.
Even if you’re not interested in seeing the new features in action, the trailer’s worth a watch, since it’s features some new animation from Tyson Hesse.
Players who already own Sonic Mania will be able to upgrade to Sonic Mania Plus digitally for $4.99. This will get fans all the additions to the actual game, but skips out on the physical copy of the game, art book, and cool packaging that comes with buying Sonic Mania Plus on its own.
Sonic Mania Plus releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on July 17th.
