Sonic the Hedgehog will be among the eclectic mix of combatants in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and for 3DS, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced this morning during the latest Nintendo Direct presentation.

This marks Sonic’s second appearance in a Smash Bros. game after first appearing in the series previous entry, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The “blue blur” joins the likes of Mario, Donkey Kong, Fox, Kirby, Link, Luigi, Bowser, Mega Man, Peach, Pikachu, Pikmin & Captain Olimar, Pit, Samus Aran, the Animal Crossing Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, and the other most recent addition, Toon Link.

A brief glimpse at Sonic in action can be seen in the trailer shown during this morning’s Nintendo Direct (embedded below).

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and for 3DS launch sometime next year.
