Sony Comments About Unreliable Times For PlayStation Store Updates

Posted on February 20, 2012 AT 06:08pm

THE BUZZ: Why do Tuesday updates to the PlayStation Store often come at irregular times? A rep from Sony recently gave a response to that.

EGM’s TAKE: For some time now, PlayStation fans have felt frustration over how those Tuesday updates seem to come at unpredictable—and regularly late—times of day.

Not, let’s be fair—in the grand scheme of things, it isn’t really that big of a deal. Still, both Nintendo and Microsoft seem to be very good at keeping to a set time for their weekly digital store updates to go up, so why can’t Sony?

In a recent post on the Official PlayStation Blog, Sony Computer Entertainment Senior Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman had the following to say:

I know that it’s frustrating when the Store publishes a little late, but there’s a huge amount of content publishing every week and I work closely with the team who publishes it — I know how hard they work to keep things on track. That said, publish times now are much better than one year ago and vastly better than 2 years ago. It’s getting better, but it’s not an “overnight fix.” Updating PS Store is a monstrous and highly stressful job, it’s much more than just flicking a switch.

Now, obviously, I have no involvement in the updating of the PlayStation Store—and as such I have absolutely no idea what the work involved with doing so is. Still, I’ve got to be honest in my opinion: It should just be the flick of a switch. All of the data needed for adding product to the PlayStation Store should be coming from a database of some sort, and there shouldn’t be any reason why all of that data couldn’t be entered in and ready to go long before the scheduled update time.

If the process is a great deal more difficult than that, then maybe the problem is that Sony’s system for managing their digital store needs to be re-examined? But again, I’m no expert.

What do you think? Do the unpredictable update times bother you, or do you not care?
