A post on the PlayStation Blog details how Sony will be handling cross-gen purchases for select titles that will grace both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation 4.
Four titles are part of this upgrade program: Assassin’s Creed IV, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Watch Dogs, and Battlefield 4. The PS3 version of each came will come with a code that can be redeemed through the PlayStation Store for the PS4 version. Once players are in possession of their new PS4, all they need to do is pop the PS3 disc in the PS4 to activate and play the PS4 version after purchasing it from the PlayStation Store at the heavily discounted price of $9.99. In this scenario, the PS3 disc is required to play the digital PS4 version, so think twice before trading it in.
Players who purchase the digital copies of these games can, obviously, bypass the activation process and head straight to the PlayStation Store to grab their $9.99 PS4 versions.
According to the post, codes must be redeemed by January 31, 2014 for Assassin’s Creed IV and Watch Dogs, March 28 for Battlefield 4, and March 31 for Call of Duty: Ghosts.
All four of these games will be available at the PlayStation 4’s launch. Assassins’ Creed IV and Battlefield 4 launch on PS3 October 29 in North America, Call of Duty: Ghosts hits November 5, while Watch Dogs on PS3 launches four days after its November 15 PS4 debut on November 19.
