Even though PlayStation Vita sales have been slow across the market (it just broke a million in Japan), Sony says you shouldn’t judge it until after this Christmas. However, they admit sales have been sluggish.

Specifically, PlayStation UK’s Fergal Gara talked to MCV (relayed by Videogamer), who said that it was “preposterous” for people to judge the handheld until the next year:

“We’d love for us to be further on,” Gara told the magazine. “And the release schedule for Vita was rather like the release schedule for the industry this year, in that it did dry up during the summer. We had that incredible summer of sport and very little focus on gaming.

“But the great news is that we have got the content in place. We have got the cash to invest in terms of marketing and retail to really ignite it this Christmas. To start judging a console before it has had its first Christmas is preposterous, really. And we are giving it everything we have got.”

Gara’s got a point—the PS Vita is barely a year old (it debuted in Japan last Decemeber) and it won’t be its biggest sales spike until Black Friday, Christmas, and New Year’s sales are over.

However, the doesn’t ignore the fact that the PS Vita will face intense competition on all front. This winter, the hottest gaming devices will arguably be the iPhone 5, Google Nexus 7, and the Wii U—and that’s still worrisome, even if Apple’s rumored iPad mini doesn’t make to store shelves later this year.
