Sony Online Entertainment reveals free-to-play zombie-survival MMO H1Z1

Posted on April 9, 2014 AT 06:05pm

Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley today revealed an unannounced project in development while appearing on Game Talk Live: a free-to-play zombie-survival MMO titled H1Z1.

Outlined in greater detail in a reddit post from Smedley, H1Z1 is described as being initially set in an “anywhere and everywhere” “Middle America” town that, according to Smedley, will feature a world that’s “orders of magnitude” larger than PlanetSide 2’s. And like SOE’s other MMO, H1Z1 will run on the Forgelight engine.

The game is set 15 years after the H1Z1 virus turns the world into a zombie-ridden post-apocalyptic wasteland. In the same vein as Rust or DayZ, players will not only have to deal with the threat of zombies and wild life, but also one another in a similarly sandbox-style world replete with fortress building, resource gathering, and a “very deep crafting system that can let players make a huge variety of awesome stuff.”

In response to how H1Z1 will set itself apart from the likes of Rust and DayZ, Smedley says their taken on survival/open-world games will support thousands of players on servers, including multiple servers with different rule sets. H1Z1 will also have the PlanetSide’s Player Studio for useres to create and sell items.

“Our goal here is to provide emergent gameplay that will allow our players to make the world their own the way they want to,” Smedley wrote. “One of the best things about H1Z1 being an MMO is the fact that with a lot of people playing, we’re able to see all different kinds of gameplay. If you prefer a quiet life as a farmer raising cops…we’re going to make sure your zombie apocalypse fantasy is complete. If you’re like me and want nothing more than to kill everything that moves, by all means see how that goes.”

Expect more details on the game to emerge soon, including an SOE livestream next week and an Early Access build in the near future.

As for systems, Smedley said, H1Z1 will launch first on PC, but a PS4 version is not out of the question.
